Tamworth Cottage Hospital
Tamworth's old Cottage Hospital
This was across the road from our house when I was a child. It is shortly to be closed after 115 years and a housing development will take it's place. It was originally built in 1880 by the Reverand William MacGregor and originally had six beds and just one nurse. Additions were made to this over a number of years, including a wing donated by Mrs Hutton and by 1904 there were 5 nurses looking after 27 beds. When it first opened the hospital was supported by members of the public , and if you needed treatment and could afford to pay then you did so.
